If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you will probably recognize the author’s name – Chrys Cymri. That’s because I’ve reviewed two of her books, The Dragon Throne and The Unicorn Throne. I swear, I’ve become a stark raving fan of her work. It’s brilliant, touching, and so well developed. There’s no swearing, and only implications of sex, which I greatly appreciate. Not that her characters don’t do those things, but the mention of them is handled with such finesse. In a time when misogyny is such a hot talking point in the publishing world, her books are refreshingly lacking, and nearly shocking in their portrayal of strong women who are considered equals.
So, if you haven’t given Chrys Cymri’s fiction a try, maybe start with this one. You can read all about my five star review below!
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Loved this book! I can’t say enough about the author or her stories.
Penny White and the Temptation of Dragons follows Penny White, a vicar with an affinity for Dr. Who and whiskey. Set in contemporary England, Penny’s life changes when one night she comes across an accident and finds a mortally wounded dragon. He asks her to read him his last rights, and in the following days she finds that a whole new world of fantasy and mayhem has been opened up to her. On top of that, her long lost brother has returned, there’s a snarky new assistant from this other world living with her, and she’s being courted by an officer and dragon.
The story is a wild ride from beginning to end. There’s fantastic creatures that can talk, like dragons, unicorns, and vampires, but there’s other creatures you’ve never heard of, like snail sharks – dog-sized snails with enough teeth to eat small creatures and the occasional baby. Though the worlds are connected, most humans can’t see the fantasy creatures without being touched by one, which is why Penny gets her own cat-bird gryphon who keeps her on her toes.
There is so much humor and intrigue, I could hardly put this book down. The characters are so fully realized, the world so complete that I could almost swear it was true. And that dragon… wow! I hope Penny takes us on MANY more adventures.
I think this will especially appeal to adults who loved the Harry Potter series, but crave something a little more adult (though still clean). Seriously one of the best fantasy novels I have read in a long time.
I received an ARC of this book, and am giving my honest opinion.
