The Confectioner's Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1)The Confectioner’s Guild
by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Confectioner’s Guild is a tale of mystery, intrigue, and romance wrapped in spun sugar and magic. Delightfully delicious!

And isn’t that cover gorgeous?

Description

Wren loved her confections, a job that kept her safe, warm, and fed. But when her cupcakes attract the attention of the Confectioner’s Guild, and she finds out she’s one of the Gifted, who can infuse food with magic, Wren thinks maybe her luck has changed.

Until the man who invited her falls dead–poisoned by her cupcake.

Now Wren must figure out who the real killer is before he/she strikes again, or it’ll be Wren’s head on the chopping block, and those of any who would dare to help her.

Review

I first saw this by way of a short story/teaser in the An Alliance of Young Adult Authors anthology, That Moment When…. I fell in love with the idea of magic food, particularly enjoying the bit about Wren finding a bag of icing and piping it on the snow. My mom is a cake decorator, and I’ve dabbled some, so the concept fascinated me.

The full story did not disappoint.

Wren is fascinating, and she comes across a full cast of characters just as delectable. The mystery of the real killer will keep you guessing, and the stakes and opposition keep stacking against Wren until it looks like there’s no way out. It kept me up late reading as I raced not only to discover the killer, but how Wren would beat the impossible. Absolutely excellent!

I think fans of Alisha Klapheke‘s The Edinburgh Seer will gobble up The Confectioner’s Guild, as well as any young adult readers who love food and magic and mystery with a pinch of romance. It’s a recipe for hours of entertainment.

**This book was absolutely clean!
