Poem: Innocence

This poem about innocence was Angel Leya's reaction to a comment made to her as a teenager that caused her to stop and ponder.

Innocence

Is there such a thing as innocence?
Soon after you’re born it’s gone.
So why are some people called innocent,
And didn’t do anything wrong?

Innocence, innocence, cover me like a child’s.
Wash me in your innocence, O God.

Once, someone said I was innocent,
But can that analogy be true?
No! I can’t be innocent.
You don’t see all the things that I do.

Innocence, innocence, cover me like a child’s.
Wash me in your innocence, O God.
Your innocence, O God.

This was also written as a sort of song, though the tune never got solidified in my mind. I wrote this after an encounter with a guy who looked me in the eyes and said, “You’re innocent.” Obviously, I was young and naive and probably much more innocent than any girl my age he had ever encountered, but that doesn’t make me innocent. I realized that no matter how good I might be, I was not without blemish. I needed a savior.

Has someone ever seen something in you that made you think or changed your perspective? Let me know in the comments below.
