Poem: Alone

Depression can be very isolating. Angel Leya wrote this as an expression of her depression, but also of her hope.

Alone

Tears fall down on a bear in my lap—
My only friend besides God.
Mom would say I need a nap;
My brother would say it’s a mood.
What neither can realize
Is that it’s a hurt
Which I carry inside,
Because no one cares about my heart.
Giving so I feel drained;
Needy, wanting some support.
“Does anyone care?” I cry aloud
As one last tear runs down my cheek.
And then my eyes are covered with a cloud,
And I simply refuse to speak.
What else can I do?
No one listens for my voice—
They wouldn’t care if they knew,
So solitude becomes my only choice.
God is the only one who cares;
My only comfort and support.
He’s the only one who sees my tears.
He protects me in His fort.
He says, “I love you.”

Depression is very isolating, and as great as my family was growing up, they didn’t always know how to handle me. I wrote Alone when I was in one of my slumps, as with most of my poetry. But, as was my custom, I ended it with a hopeful note, which helped bring some peace to my troubled mind.

What brings you peace? What troubles are you facing? Let me know in the comments below.
