A Laundry Room Makeover Story

The Laundry Room Before

I hate to do laundry, so I figured if I made the laundry room a fun place to be, maybe doing laundry wouldn’t be such a chore. I decided to paint the laundry room, hoping a beautiful paint scheme would help. I used some leftover paints I had and painted it to look like an abstract version of a watermelon.

Initially I was pleased, but after a couple of weeks I decided I wasn’t really happy with the way it looked. I tried to like it, but the colors were just disappointing. So what to do now? I had moved shelves, cabinets, and tools into the room, and I didn’t want to have to move all that plus the washer and dryer to repaint the whole thing.

After some contemplation, I decided that the color that really didn’t work for me was the watermelon. I had used the green in the adjoining bathroom and enjoyed it. Besides, keeping the green helps tie the two rooms together. I also wanted to keep the white stripe, because I felt it made sense and looked nice.

So what color would I choose to go with that beautiful sage green? There are several colors that come to mind, but the idea that really appealed to me was a beautiful combo of lavender and green. I’ve seen it so many times before and it just looks fresh. And what does lavender and green remind me of? Flowers, of course!

I was able to complete the laundry room makeover in two Saturdays. First, I had to prime over the awful ‘watermelon’ I had painted previously. I was able to prime the walls, trim and cabinets all in one afternoon. The next weekend I was ready to paint my beautiful new scheme! I cut in the edges first and then rolled the rest in. I decided to paint some simple white flowers for an additional fun element. I found some old dragonfly lights that I had stored away and decided they would make the perfect accent to the new flower theme.
