A look at the aftermath of removing the center of dad’s belt to make little man’s belt.

My little man has a long, lean build, and having a baby belt became nearly a necessity for me, as he’s usually tall enough for certain pant sizes, but not thick enough to keep them up. In addition, I love the way he looks when he’s dressed like a little man, and belts are a great finishing accessory. I was motivated to find him a belt, and I searched several local retail stores, but nothing I found fit him.

That’s when I decided to make my baby boy a belt instead.

The process actually was a lot easier than I would have thought. My husband had an old (faux?) leather belt that was coming unglued, and he wasn’t interested in repairing it, so I decided to use it for this project. It had two plies, but a single ply of the leather was the ideal thickness. Of course, being a man’s belt, the leather was far too wide to fit through little man’s belt loops. I found that scissors went through the material like butter, and I carefully trimmed off the sides, leaving the decorative center and pre-punched belt holes intact.

Once I had the leather cut out, I needed to add the hardware so that we could get the belt to hold. I had a skinny belt that I didn’t care for, and I carefully pried the leather ends apart so that I could reuse the fasteners as well as the clasp. I then measured the belt against my son’s waist to see how long it would need to be, trimmed the length, and installed the clasp. I used a little glue for extra security, and hammered the preserved fasteners until they locked together.

I wasn’t able to add a loop on the other side of the clasp, but I found that an old black hair band worked just as well. I simply looped it around until it fit tightly around the belt, and slid it into place.

With his new baby boy belt, little man looks dapper when he wears his jeans and fancy pants, and the pants don’t fall down. Yay!
